The title of the movie that I am going to introduce is “Queen of Katwe”. This movie was released on September 30, 2016. The director of this movie is Mira Nair. The other three important actors are Madina Nalwanga who played Phiona Mutesi, Ethan Nazario Lubega who played Benjamin, and lastly Lupita Nyong'o who played Phiona’s mother. Phiona had to work every day to survive. Then, she found out there was a game called chess. She took lessons and became good at it. I like this movie because I play chess and this movie is about chess so I feel connected to it.
In the movie, there are many interesting things that I can talk about. Starting with the music, there aren't many soundtracks in this movie. I think that’s because chess is a serious game so the director wanted to keep a serious atmosphere. I think that decision was good for the movie. Secondly, there are funny gestures in the movie that I enjoyed. For example, when the main character won the game, she snapped her fingers in a way that I thought was strange but cool. The overall acting was very expressive so their emotions were relatable. Thirdly, the cinematography was quite good too. As a chess player myself, it is fun to watch when the movie shows the whole chessboard while they are playing the game. I also liked it because at 53:57 in the movie I felt like I was in the scene. There are a few other scenes in the movie like these. I have two things that I like about this movie. First, I like chess because chess is fun for me. Also, I like that she doesn’t just win. The movie would be boring if she wins every game. Like the positive part, I have two things that I dislike about this movie. Starting with, I hate that she is so good at the beginning. That is a little bit unfair for other characters if she wins them without practicing. Next, I didn’t like that Phiona’s mother hated chess at first. I think the movie would be better if she allowed her daughter to play chess in a happy mood. There was one message in the movie that is very important. The message was, ‘don’t give up even though you think there is no hope.’ This message was very clear in the story, so I like it.
I like this chess movie, “Queen of Katwe”. I like this movie because it has good cinematography, acting, and music. There were sad parts, happy parts, and emotional parts too. The plot was easy to understand as well. I give this movie a four out of five potato rating because this movie is good but not perfect. I wish the movie added some parts like Phion’s so good at chess from the beginning. I highly recommend this movie to everyone but especially to chess beginners.
